A battle lost. A friend fallen. Cue the heroic undead... Vicky shouldn’t be alive. Knowing she has necromancer Damian Vesik to thank for her second chance, she’s willing to do whatever it takes to return the favor.
Damian is lost, trapped inside a corrupted shell of his own power and entwined with the Fae called Hern. Time is running out as Damian loses more of himself with every passing moment, bringing the necromancer one step closer to oblivion.
But Vicky isn’t the only one who aims to stop the colossus. Damian’s allies are rallying, ready to go to battle for their chimichanga-loving friend. Time will tell if it’s enough to bring him back from the brink, though the Mad King’s ambitions may have already doomed them all.
The Books of the Dead start here. Strap in for macabre thrills and supernatural chills in this gripping installment of Eric R. Asher’s Vesik series!
Eric is a former bookseller, cellist, and comic seller currently living in Saint Louis, Missouri. A lifelong enthusiast of books, music, toys, and games, he discovered a love for the written word after being dragged to the library by his parents at a young age. When he is not writing, you can usually find him reading, gaming, or buried beneath a small avalanche of Transformers.
The Book of the Ghost by Eric R Asher Book 9 of the Vesik series. Urban fantasy. Best read as part of the series and in order. Friends rally and sacrifice to try to save Damian. The battle continues with Vicky leading the charge.
Constant action and reaction. Negotiations and violence. Many supporting characters that have been central to the full series.
I have to be honest: I’ve skipped a few books to read this one. I have most of them, but I wanted to catch up. Yes, it was a little difficult, but I have to say that now I remembered why I enjoyed the series so much in the first place: well-written, interesting characters, and great action. I know I missed some nuances, but I actually didn’t have too hard of a time catching up. Not only that, I am really invested in what comes next. This is the sign of a great author. The only thing I wish was that there was a little more description with the characters. I am now determined to go back and read the ones leading up to this one. So many books, so little time! Highly recommend! I was provided a copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
The Book of the Ghost is the ninth book in the Vesick series. This can be read as a standalone. But the series is so good that I highly recommend that you read all the books. There is a lot of violence. Once again the author has written an amazing book and once I started reading I couldn't put it down.
I really enjoyed listening to this story!! It was full of action, suspense and humor. Asher has a way with words that keep you entertained from beginning to end.
The characters are phenomenal. I fell in love with them and loved the connection I made with them.
The story-line was amazing!! I was completely hooked from beginning to end. The way Asher weaves the words into his story keeps you craving to read/listen to more.
Narrator was really good!! I loved how she changed her voices for each character because it made it the story that much more interesting and kept me loving the story too!! I highly recommend this story!!
I've been following these characters for nine books now and I am still so invested. This book was, as usual, amazing. Vicky is really proving herself, all allies are doing their best and without spoiling... going through a lot of growth. This book was an amazing emotional ride and I can't wait to see what comes next for everyone!
Oh boy Damion has gotten himself in so much trouble of course thinking he can help but the twist is Hern seams to have taken over his body and he’s now killing anyone or anything that crosses his path, zola Vicky and even the ghost Terrance can’t get him out of it alone. To save him Vicky had to go to Gaia to ask maybe beg for her help so now he’s locked up with her the others can get their heads around the old king and how to stop him, j enjoyed the banter and the coming together that showed in this story
I listened to this book and the narrator is good. This is mostly Vicky's story and all the friends who are trying to save Damien's life. It is fast paced from page one and it does not let up. The world building was fabulous. I did get a little confused with some characters, but overall I did ok.
Very good addition to the series. I didn't think I'd like it with out Damien, but Vicky carried the story very well. She has some pretty big decisions to make and does a fine job.
In the Vesik books Damien is the one fighting to save his friends but now that he is in serious trouble things have changed. Reinforcement has come to his aid and it is being lead by Vicky. The little ghost girl who had a special bond with Happy is now a kickass girl fighting not just for Damien but for her life and Sam's as they are joined together from past events that saved Vicky. Readers were left at the end of Book 8 impatiently waiting for this book and we are not dissapointed. Eric Asher creates characters that you become so attached to and you love the good guys and loathe the bad. I highly recommend the Vesick series and you must read them in order.
This book picks up exactly where the last one left off, and with a breakneck, breathtaking, headlong plunge into both a battle and the story.
The central character in this one is Vicky, determined to save Damien, she is willing to go to any lengths. She even has her own little group to help her out, as well as Jasper of course.
As usual, brilliantly written, well paced and totally enthralling. Can't wait for the next installment.
I was sent an advance copy for review, but I loved the book, so I went and purchased a copy so my review has that fancy "verified purchase" tag!
This is the first in a series of novellas where Mr. Asher is taking his series in a new and different direction. Each novella will be told from a different perspective, which is quite the daunting task, if you ask me. Writing 8 full length novels from one major view point and then switching it up to monthly smaller novellas each from a different headspace seems like a pretty daunting task to me, especially with trying to keep the characters different and not just varying shades of the same character he wrote with Vesik.
With all of that ballyhoo out of the way, onto the story! Vicky is one of the more tragic characters from the series, a poor girl who has been to hell(worse actually) and back. She is fighting to help save those who saved her and while there is a definitive lack of chimichangas, there is plenty of action to make up for it. Her take on the situations at hand are a lot different from Vesik and so are her actions.
While I am saddened by the shorter story, with a new novella coming out each month, I am ok with it, as it means I won't be waiting a year(or more) for the next novel.
The first of the ten-part Books of the Dead. The allies of the necromancer, Damian Vesik, struggle to free him from the clutches of the mad Gwyn ap Nudd, who has turned him into a monstrous horror that lashes out at both friend and foe alike.
While familiar with the Vesik books and its cast of characters, I found myself a bit lost when starting this story. The blame falls mostly on my rather scattered reading of the series and shows that I need to do some serious catch-up.
In spite of my initial confusion, Asher's strong storytelling and varied characters quickly drew me back into Vesik's world. The combination of the modern and historic, drawing from a variety of mythoi, continues to be both familiar yet different as the elements are woven together in new and interesting ways. Yet, the tale is not trapped in the cerebral, containing enough action and emotion to entertain and touch the reader. On all levels, it comes across as a good and enjoyable read.
I have already read the next story in the series and will be reviewing it shortly. It has me looking forward to the next eight parts of the series.
Asher has flipped the script and is writing a series of ten novellas to backfill character stories while continuing the main Vesik storyline. This is the first of those and the concept doesn't disappoint at all. I can't wait to read the next nine over the course of a year.
Vickie, everyone's favorite little ghost turned Demigod turned Harrower turned Demon turned soul sword wielding preteen is back with Jasper, her pet dragon Reaver, and kicking butt. For those who have wondered about Drake, Wahya, and the rest of the Obsidian Inn this is your book. It picks up at the end of Forgotten Ghosts (Vesik 8) with Damian having merged with Hern to become a colossus of gravemaker and Fae magic that looks unstoppable and soon to be under Nudd's control. Enter Vicky, Samantha, and Damian's friends to the.....you didn't think I'd spoil the whole thing did you?. Give it a read. The only thing you'll regret is getting to the last page knowing that the next book won't be out until October 25th.
The Book of the Ghost was okay. It’s possible I don’t remember enough of what happened in previous installments, but I was more or less indifferent to following the somewhat fluid set of characters back and forth as they went here to talk to someone, or there to fetch an item. It reminded me a bit of what I do remember from a few of those previous entries, though I suspect I was more invested for those.
Much of what happened didn’t make sense to me, which is where I tend to divest emotionally. If there’s a simpler solution and it’s not discussed and discarded for, honestly, even a terrible reason, rather than feeling frustrated, I just lose interest. Maybe I missed those parts.
That said, it wasn’t bad. It was fine. Were it a TV show, I still would have watched it, but while also reading a book or browsing twitter on my phone.
Fast paced and action packed. It was hard to read everything that the characters go through in this book which made it very emotional for me.
Vicky is really proving herself to be a huge asset to these allies, someone to he taken very seriously. Some surprising new allies in this book as well.
So many sit on the edge of your seat moments, heart in throat... I'm so vested in this family of characters that it's hard to see anything bad happen to any of them.
So waiting for the day they'll get some light back in their lives, some breath of fresh air. They've been fighting so long that normal, for them, is so much in their distant past.
Ready for some redemption for all the allies. So excited to see where they get to next.
(If there were more than 5 stars, I'd give them all.) It's hard to write this without spoilers. BUT this was a most unexpected twist. The whole BOOK was a twist - the title, the cover, the plot, the point-of-view. Hopefully not too spoiler-y, but the protagonist isn't the protagonist in this one! After 8 books, Eric flipped the script on us (literally)! I love the growth in this book of the main character. I love seeing from the character's point of view because up until this point that character has been seen from other's points of view. This leaves me super excited for the next book in this series. It didn't really end on a cliffhanger but it surely ended on a "let's get some rest - to be continued." Will a sleeping giant awaken? Will there be permanent loss? Who knows but I'm waiting!
The Book of the Ghost is the first in a set of novellas from the Versik series by Eric. What make theses so great and my favorite is each novella will be a different point of view from what we are used to from this series. In the book of the ghost we (finally) get Vickie’s point of view. I honesty love Vickie’s character in this series, she is everything you’d want in a young female character. As with any book of Erics it’s action packed laced with sarcasm. I recommend this series to everyone because there is nothing not to love about this series. This is defiantly not a standalone, so if you haven’t read the first 8 books go start with Days gone bad. (I was provided an advance copy by the publisher to review)
It was interesting to have the time told from Vickys’s point of view while Damion is out for the count. Immediately headed into the next book. Always a great series with many, many characters to enjoy.
Of course I am a huge fan of Vesik! I also laughed my rear off at the exploding pidgeons in book one, not because I condone harming any critter, but because it was a funny story in a fiction book.. Book of the Ghost is a fantastic story told mostly from Vicky's stand point. That little gal has been through hell and yet comes through with such courage and loyalty it floors me! I highly recommend reading this book!! Now to see what flavor chimichanga is available for lunch!
YES!!! Another book in the Vesik series! But unlike the earlier Vesik books, these new ones involve the characters that are a part of Damian’s life one way or another and pull them to the fore. Eagerly awaited and almost instantly devoured. An exciting new addition to Eric R Asher’s Damian Vesik series. I am lucky in that I get to read and review this book free of charge but I always purchase Eric Asher’s books for my own personal collection.
A fast-paced thrill ride. This book switches perspectives from the main character to the girl with the furball dragon and who doesn’t like dragons? It is a short read but packed with fun and shows a lot of what goes on behind the scenes. It really fleshes out the story on the thrill-packed rollercoaster ride of the Vesik series. I have followed the series from the start and this is another great addition that leaves me wanting more. Another great job by Eric Asher!
I’ve been anxiously waiting for this book since I finished book 8, and once again Eric Asher knocks it out of the park. This book has plenty of twists and turns plus all our favorite characters. Vickie is such a tough fighter and is working hard to save Damien, Sam and herself along with the rest of the world. Thank goodness we only have to wait a month for the next book!
Not gonna lie I was a little hesitant about this book because it was from Vicky's perspective and not Vesik's. Well it turns out that was a brilliant idea on Asher's part and I can't wait to read the other books with more varying perspectives. This series just keeps getting better and better people.
You need to read The Vesik series. Eric R. Asher is giving us the next great epic series.
I love Damien but Vicky is a little badass. Who doesn't want to read about epic battles, a necromancer & ghosts. Two thumbs up. I can't wait for the next book.
First I saw when I got it, that's only 128 pages on kindle? why is this so very short? Sure I am so looking forward to read this part. I will update my review of course, just wondered if anyone else found it quite short, regarding to all other parts of this series.
Pretty much non stop action in the war against Nudd. I absolutely loved this part of Damian's story and can't wait to see where else you take us. This part of Damian' tale is so well written! You MUST read this latest offering from Eric!
